A website is found using search engines by a process called Crawling. Crawler is a program used by SEO to find an ample number of websites related to a particular keyword furnished to search engine. Google and Yahoo also use crawlers to display the results. Yahoo uses paid submission method of crawler which ensures a user not only the content but also specific ranking among the results. Google webmaster tools is used by Google to ensure all pages are found after your search. Crawling depends on several factors of the site. Major factor considered is Distance of the site from the root-directory which decides whether that site can be indexed or not by crawling process.
All the content of the site cannot be allowed for crawling. Sometimes customers’ personal mails, Shopping cart, Credit card information etc, must not be freely allowed for crawling. Hence to exclude certain pages from the results page, crawlers or spiders can be instructed by the web-masters can meta tag certain pages required for exclusion using robot.txt file.
SEO has broadly classified its optimization techniques in two ways. One way is to produce search results by employing methods that agree with terms and conditions, and guidelines of search engines. This method lasts permanently and is named as White hat method. The other way is to produce search results without following the guidelines. This is also called as Black-hat method. White hat method also includes techniques to reduce the effects of Black-hat method such as Spamdexing. A method can be named as White hat if it gives the results honestly according to the requirement of the user and not according to benefit of the website. Some techniques appended to the SEO such as adding irrelevant keywords will change a website index ranking and thus will be included in the results page though not required by the user. Such methods are called Black hat methods. White hat methods also enhance the accessibility of the website during a search. Black hat method involves various deceptive methods to improve ranking of the website. Many spam search methods pop-up into the mails of website hosts asking them to pour high amounts just to make their website as #1 rank in the google result pages. Such methods can be named as black hat methods. Sometimes modifying the text colors also results in improving the ranks of the website. Such type of SEO is also a black hat technique.
Search engines have absolute authority to penalize, ban or remove the websites completely from the database if they are considered to follow black hat techniques of SEO. Sometimes web applications are used to change the properties and content of the website dynamically according to the visitors’ requirement demanded in the recent past. Such methods are also penalized. This is called Dynamic Search Engine Optimization, one of the poisonous methods prevailing.
